Migratory Birds
Where do they go?
They fly from North to South
In search of a warmer climate
For promises of spring
And a place they believe they’d “like it”

Seven thousand kilometres could
Mean several days of journey
But for us who fly on planes
‘Tis but the blink of an eye

You can’t comprehend the distance
Until you realise
The thread the ties one to the North
Is stretched thin and almost snapt.

Are there words that can truly convey
A hundredth of what I feel
In a tongue I’m unfamiliar with
And an accent from TV drills

Birds that land in the South
May sound similar to the locals
Whose subtle angling away of the shoulders
Will show you how they feel

A lovely nod, a spritely smile,
A nice “how do you do”
With gazes kind of vacant
And looks right over you

Migratory birds,
Where do they go?
When the weather becomes cold again
They chase the season’s flow
